Perhaps you’ve read scary things about GLP-1 side effects, but now research shows these weight loss drugs may benefit heart health.
GLP-1 receptor agonist medications — also used for blood sugar control — may also offer meaningful long-term protection for the heart, according to new research.
The analysis was conducted by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University and published in Cardiovascular Diabetology – Endocrinology Reports (2026).
The team reviewed data from more than 90,000 participants across 11 major international cardiovascular outcome trials.
These studies followed patients for at least one year, with an average follow-up period of nearly three years.
All participants were taking GLP-1 drugs or a placebo, allowing researchers to compare long-term cardiovascular outcomes between the groups.
GLP-1 Meds and the Heart
Across the combined data, people taking GLP-1 medications had about a 13% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.
These events included heart attacks, strokes, and deaths related to cardiovascular disease.
The results suggest the benefits are not just short-term metabolic improvements, but sustained effects that continue over time.
Importantly, the cardiovascular benefits were seen in both people with and without diabetes.
The analysis also found that people taking these medications were less likely to die from any cause during the study periods.
Rates of non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes, and hospitalizations for heart failure were all reduced compared with placebo groups.
The strongest effects were seen in people already at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
That includes individuals with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or existing heart conditions.
Safety Findings from the Study
The researchers did not find an increase in serious safety issues compared with placebo.
There was no meaningful rise in risks such as severe low blood sugar or acute pancreatitis.
However, gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and vomiting were more common, which is already a known and expected effect of this drug class.
Of note: The study did not specifically examine the idea that the cardiovascular improvements may have been from the weight loss caused by a GLP-1.
