Creatine is usually associated with bigger lifts, explosive power and better gym performance. But this white powder has a role beyond exercise.

You don’t need supplements to have creatine. Your liver, kidneys and pancreas make it from amino acids including glycine, arginine and methionine.

Most creatine is stored in muscle after traveling through the blood. Smaller amounts are found in the brain, heart and other tissues.

Inside cells, creatine becomes phosphocreatine, providing a quickly available energy backup. It helps restore ATP, the molecule responsible for quick energy.

This system becomes useful when energy demands rise suddenly, whether you’re sprinting, lifting weights or performing demanding mental tasks.

Creatine eventually becomes creatinine, which the kidneys filter from the blood and remove through urine. Despite the similar names, they are different substances.

Muscles can hold only so much creatine. Once stores are saturated, taking more doesn’t mean it will continue accumulating.

Creatine for Exercise and Brain Function

Creatine monohydrate is the most studied form. By raising muscle creatine and phosphocreatine stores, it can help replenish ATP during brief, powerful efforts.

That can improve power, sprint performance and training capacity.

Researchers are also examining brain benefits. Studies suggest creatine could affect memory, processing speed and mood, particularly among people whose natural levels are lower, including older adults.

Dr. Mehdi Boroujerdi, a pharmaceutical scientist and former professor, points to creatine’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity as reasons for interest in medical applications. More clinical research is needed.

Creatine Dosage and Individual Responses

A common loading approach uses around 20 grams daily, divided into servings for five to seven days, followed by 3-5 grams per day.

Loading isn’t required. Smaller daily amounts can eventually fill muscle stores, although it takes longer.

The body doesn’t absorb or retain every gram consumed. Muscle capacity and digestion can affect retention.

Taking creatine with carbohydrates may also improve uptake through insulin-related transport.

Responses vary based on genetics, diet, age and sex.

Vegetarians and vegans often begin with lower creatine stores because they consume little or no animal food, potentially making supplementation more noticeable.

Older adults may see benefits involving muscle preservation, cognition and physical function.

Women can respond differently, partly because average baseline stores and muscle mass differ.

Research has also explored creatine alongside beta-alanine, although findings remain inconsistent.

Long Term Creatine Safety

Creatine helps supply energy, but it isn’t a substitute for exercise, nutrition or building muscle through training.

Once stores are full, extra creatine won’t keep increasing them. Excess is converted to creatinine and eliminated.

Research hasn’t found evidence that creatine damages healthy kidneys. Anyone with kidney disease should discuss supplementation with a healthcare professional before using it.
