BEEEEEEEP! Am I the only one who thinks it’s SO stupid that these beep-outs on TV for swear words are ridiculously loud?
Why is there this standard, high-pitched, LOUD beep to cover up foul language?
Why is the beep WAY louder than the words it conceals? This is so ridiculous that it makes my blood boil.
Sometimes there’s so much beeping that all I hear is a string of nonstop beeping.
It’s not that I usually watch shows in which there’s a lot of swearing.
But sometimes a rash of it suddenly comes up. Or, sometimes a beep suddenly sounds when I didn’t expect it.
Not all shows that have these shrill loud beeps are trashy.
One day I was channel surfing and saw actress Mayim Bialik being interviewed on some late morning talk show.
Can’t get more wholesome than Mayim Bialik, right? She used to play a nerd on “The Big Bang Theory” and has hosted for “Jeopardy Championships.”
On the talk show, a mock Jeopardy was given to her, and one of the questions had to do with a “bad” Yiddish word.
She said something that was beeped out. Then the two hosts began talking — and more beeps sounded: that same, high-pitched, loud beep that was always on “Jerry Springer,” reality shows and anywhere else for that matter.
Why must it be so loud?
Call me “ultra-sensitive” all you want. Label me all you want with a “sensory disorder.” But you cannot deny the following facts:
- There is no logical reason why the beeping must be significantly louder than the voices involved.
- There exists no sensible, intelligent reason why the beeps are louder than what the TV volume is set for.
- There’s absolutely no smart reason for why the tone must be shrill high.
- The directors who want all the beeping inserted are incredibly daft for not realizing that listening to a flurry of these beeps is MORE OFFENSIVE than the actual foul language due to the shrill, high volume.
- Give me one good reason why these filler beeps can’t be of a softer, lower tone. Why not a middle key instead of a high key?
Is the high-pitched nature meant for shock value? Viewers don’t need a high tone to know that someone just cussed.
We’ll get the picture just as well if the tone were lower and softer.
One time I was watching “Jerry Springer” (yes, I was in the mood for some brief mindless entertainment) when the guests erupted in an exchange of foul language.
For several minutes all I heard was beeping. Yeah, right, like that is SO entertaining. I switched channels.
When are the decision makers for this offensive filler noise going to, for once, think outside the box and use a lower-pitched, more ear-friendly filler?
Why must ALL TV programs use the same, high-pitched noise?
And why must it be notably louder than the ambient conversation?
Again, you can call my ears “really sensitive” all you want. But reread the aforementioned bullet points.
Every one of them is true. And there is NO logical, sensible, reasonable or intelligent explanation for why dubbed-in beeping must be the way it is for every single show that uses it.
