Research suggests that an exercise regimen may reshape the nerves that control how the heart functions.
Scientists have found that moderate aerobic exercise changes the heart’s nerve system in different ways on the left and right sides of the body.
How Exercise Changes Heart Control Nerves
Researchers from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom studied how exercise affects the nerve clusters responsible for regulating heart activity.
The study, published in Autonomic Neuroscience, found that regular training caused noticeable changes in these nerve structures.
These nerves act like a control system for the heart, adjusting signals that influence heart rate and function.
Researchers compared trained and untrained rats to see how exercise affected this system.
After 10 weeks of aerobic training, the exercising rats showed major differences in their cardiovascular nerve clusters.
The right side developed about four times as many neurons compared with the left side when compared with animals that did not exercise.
At the same time, neurons on the left side became almost twice as large, while neurons on the right side became slightly smaller.
The findings suggest that exercise does not simply strengthen the heart’s nervous system. Instead, it appears to remodel it in a side-specific way.
The body’s automatic nervous system controls many functions without conscious effort, including heart rate and blood pressure.
Within this system are nerve clusters called stellate ganglia, which help send signals that increase heart activity.
When these nerves become overactive, they can contribute to problems such as abnormal heart rhythms, certain types of chest pain, and stress-induced heart conditions.
Current treatments sometimes attempt to reduce activity in these nerve clusters through procedures such as nerve blocks or denervation.
The investigation suggests that understanding differences between the left and right sides could eventually help doctors make these treatments more precise.
Exercise May Help Guide Future Heart Therapies
Dr. Augusto Coppi, senior lecturer in veterinary anatomy at the University of Bristol and lead author of the study, says the findings reveal a previously unknown left-right pattern in the body’s heart-control system.
According to researchers, the nerve clusters function somewhat like a dimmer switch, adjusting how strongly signals affect the heart.
Exercise appears to modify this system differently depending on which side of the body is involved.
If future studies confirm similar effects in humans, doctors may be able to design treatments that target specific nerve pathways rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
This could potentially improve therapies for arrhythmias, angina and stress related heart conditions.
The research is still in an early stage and was conducted in rats, meaning the results can’tyet be directly applied to humans.
However, the findings provide new insight into how exercise affects the body beyond muscles, endurance and blood vessels.
