Have you noticed that the drainage from your mastectomy is warm enough to make the outside of the JP bulb feel warm?
I noticed that right away after my preventive double mastectomy.
And I knew the reason that the drainage fluid warms up the JP bulb is because the BODY is very warm inside.
Normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees. Sometimes people are in the high 97’s.
Upper 90’s is HOT outside, so you can imagine how warm your body is inside if your body temperature is in the upper 90’s.
So naturally, any fluid buildup that’s being drained out is going to be warm.
I decided to write an article about this because I figured that many women who’ve undergone a mastectomy will be curious about this – but not be able to realize the answer.
And I could not find an article about this anywhere online.
I wanted to give an explanation other than just the obvious (the inside of the body is very warm).
So I asked my breast care nurse if there was a “more medical explanation” for why the drainage following a mastectomy is warm.
Well, there wasn’t any more of an answer she could give me than, “The body is warm.”
So there you have it. Your skin is warm, right? So it stands to logic that anything that seeps out of the skin will also be warm to the touch – enough so even to warm up the outside of a JP drain bulb.
