Sudden abdominal cramping during a pregnancy can be quite alarming, as this can make a woman fear that she’s having a miscarriage.
Many expectant women want to know if a miscarriage will necessarily cause cramping in the abdomen.
“No — Many miscarriages, especially early miscarriages, occur as painless bleeding,” says Daniel Kort, MD, Practice Director of Neway Fertility, one of NYC’s leading fertility centers specializing in customized and affordable natural fertility treatments.
Dr. Kort adds, “Other miscarriages, referred to as missed abortions, are completely silent and diagnosed on ultrasound alone.”
So if you’ve been having stomach cramps during your pregnancy, there’s no reason to lose sleep over the possibility that it might be a miscarriage.
On the other hand, cramping is a symptom that you need to get examined for.
It can have many causes, some not even related to carrying a baby. Causes can range from harmless to serious.
Prenatal care is so very important.
Normally a patient is encouraged to come in on a monthly basis for an ultrasound of the developing baby.
Month by month checks that turn out normal will be very reassuring to the patient.
And by the way, if you smoke, quit. Smoking is a risk factor for a miscarriage.
A smoker who’s pregnant might feel that this is not a good time to give up a habit that helps relax them during stressful moments.
However, there’s never a good time for a baby to start smoking.
