If your cat has bald patches above its eyes, you may be worried that cancer might be a possible cause.

There are actually several possible causes of bald patches—loss of fur—occurring above a cat’s eyes.

Can cancer cause bald patches above a cat’s eyes?

Thank goodness, the answer is no. Many pet owners automatically worry about cancer whenever a new symptom—even one that seems rather trivial—surfaces in their beloved pet.

It is always so important to keep tabs on any new-onset symptoms or changes in your pet.

“Bald patches above your cat’s eyes can be caused by a few things,” says world-renowned integrative veterinarian Carol Osborne, DVM, at Chagrin Falls Pet Clinic, and creator of PAAWS: Pet Anti-Aging Wellness System for dogs and cats.

Dr. Osborne continues, “Age and ringworm, as well as ear mites and flea allergies. As your cat ages it’s not uncommon for your cat to experience hair loss above their eyes.

“Short haired cats experiencing hair loss are usually more noticeable than in their long hair cousins.

“The older your cats gets the more likely it is for hair loss to occur.”

Ringworm

Dr. Osborne explains, “Another common cause of bald patches about the eyes is ringworm. Many kittens have ringworm which can be treated with proper antifungal medication.

“Older cats can get ringworm too, so if you notice your cat is suddenly showing signs of balding above their eyes, then it’s time for a vet visit to get a definitive diagnosis.”
