A toddler should not have blue lips upon waking from a nap or under any other circumstance unless they got into Big Sis’s blue lipstick.

“The big concern when somebody has blue lips is whether this represents a serious problem,” says Irene Tien, MD, a board-certified pediatric ER physician with Mass General Brigham in MA.

“Blue lips can be indicative of something called cyanosis, which refers to not enough oxygen in the blood,” continues Dr. Tien.

“Sometimes you can get cyanosis due to blood vessels constricting due to being cold. toddler

“The biggest concern is when is cyanosis is indicative of a breathing or heart problem.

“In general, children who have lung or heart problems causing cyanosis will have other symptoms like difficulty with feeding, increased respiratory rate, poor growth, increased respiratory rate, paleness or poor body tone.

“One of the most common false alarms is when a child has just drank or eaten something that is making their lips look blue.

“If there is a concern about blue lips and your child looks well, call your pediatrician to discuss your concerns.

“If your child does not look well to you, you should bring them immediately to the emergency room for an evaluation.”
